SEEIIST is proud to have contributed to the newly published CERN Yellow Report, “Heavy Ion Therapy in Europe: Present and Future”. This comprehensive document provides a strategic vision for the development of heavy ion therapy across Europe, reinforcing the importance of expanding access to cutting-edge cancer treatment—an opportunity that South East Europe cannot afford to miss.
Why Does This Matter for South East Europe?
Heavy ion therapy represents one of the most advanced and effective methods for treating cancer, particularly for radio-resistant and inoperable tumors. While several European countries have already invested in this technology, South East Europe still lacks a dedicated facility. This means that patients from the region must travel abroad for treatment, creating an economic and social burden.
SEEIIST was established with a clear mission: to bring world-class cancer treatment and research infrastructure to South East Europe. This CERN report provides further validation of why such a center is needed and how international cooperation is key to making it a reality.
The Technology, the Expertise, and the Need Are All Here—Now It’s Time to Act
The scientific knowledge and technology to establish a Hadron Therapy and Research Facility in South East Europe already exist. SEEIIST has developed a robust scientific and technical plan, supported by top international experts and institutions. What is needed now is decisive action from governments and policymakers to move from vision to implementation.
We Call on Regional Governments to Take the Next Step
Countries across Europe are investing in heavy ion therapy because they recognize its life-saving potential and its role in driving medical and technological innovation. South East Europe must not be left behind. We urge regional governments to take concrete steps towards establishing this center—ensuring that our citizens benefit from the best possible cancer care without needing to leave their region.
